TRENDS IN PLASTIC SURGERY FOR 2014

The quest for perfection is keeping strong with no signs of slowing down.  According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), cosmetic surgery procedures went up by 17% in 2013 as compared to 2012, while The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows a 5% increase from 2011 to 2012 in the US. (No data is available as of yet for 2013).  The top procedures in both countries were:
  • Breast augmentation
  • Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
  • Face and neck lifts
  • Breast reduction
  • Nose jobs (rhinoplasty)
  • Liposuction
  • Tummy tucks (abdominoplasty)
  • Fat transfer operations
  • Brow lifts
  • Ear corrections (otoplasty)
Procedures on the rise, and trending in 2014, include both those for the face and the body, and the general request is based on minimal down-time, minimal recovery and the best possible natural-looking results.  This is inevitable as with the advances in technology, procedures are becoming more convenient, less invasive and more effective.

Is there a trend among various age groups though?

ASPS states: “the most popular cosmetic surgeries can be broken down by age group” and that “some procedures are consistently popular with certain age groups”.
  • Age group 13 – 19: nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
  • Age group 20 – 29: breast augmentation
  • Age group 30 – 39: liposuction
  • Age group 40 – 54: eyelid and/or brow lifting
  • Age group 55+:  facelift

What are we seeing for this year?

It seems certain that old habits die much harder than others – especially when it comes to beauty, but as the industry evolves, so do the trends, in an attempt to stay in sync.  So, here’s what’s trending for 2014:
  • Facelifts top the list with couples opting for this procedure together
  • Breast surgery (augmentation, reduction, and/or lift)
  • Chin implants (the procedure adds definition and balances facial features)
  • Tummy Tucks (it takes away loose skin and tightens up the abdominal muscles)
  • Brachioplasty or “Bingo Wing” Surgery (removes excess, aging skin from the upper arms)
